How to Remove a Background on iPhone
Three ways to cut out a photo background on iOS — including the method that keeps your photo entirely on your phone.
Option 1: Browser-based AI (most private)
- Open Safari and go to the Deback background remover.
- Tap the upload area and choose Photo Library.
- Pick your photo. The AI model downloads once (about 44 MB on first visit), then processes the image entirely on your iPhone — nothing is uploaded.
- Preview the cutout and tap Download transparent PNG. It saves to your Files app or Photos, depending on your Safari settings.
This is the only method here where your photo never touches a server at all.
Option 2: The built-in iOS trick
Recent iOS versions can lift a subject from a photo: open the photo, long-press the subject until it highlights, then copy or share the cutout. It is fast and works offline — but you get less control, no transparent-PNG download option in some flows, and results vary by photo. Good for quick stickers and messages; less ideal for listings or design work.
Option 3: Dedicated apps
Apps like Photoroom offer polished mobile background removal with templates and batch features. The trade-off: most require accounts, many upload your photos to their servers for processing, and the best features sit behind subscriptions. Fine if you want an all-in-one editor; overkill if you just need a clean cutout.
Tips for good results on iPhone
- Use the original photo, not a screenshot. Screenshots are lower resolution and often include interface elements.
- Keep Safari updated. Background AI runs best on recent iOS/Safari versions with current WebAssembly and GPU support.
- Watch your storage on first use. The one-time model download needs free space; after that it is cached.
- Portrait-mode photos help. The depth data in Portrait shots often correlates with cleaner subject separation.
